Why I'm ditching protective styling

For the best part of two years I've spent my life 'bunning' my hair and being honest with myself I hate it. It's been my daily hairstyle, only wearing my hair out in the evenings. It makes me feel pretty self conscious, and I've been particularly aware of it recently.

Whilst doing my weekly youtube catch up I found this video. It made me think, so over the next few days I started attempting to look my best everyday. Surprisingly it made me feel great! I felt super confident and happy.

So how am I going to keep my hair healthy if I'm ditching protective styling?

Firstly, I'm not going to use my flat irons for as long as possible / only using them on my roots. Instead, I've started roller setting and I'm loving the results.

I'm also wearing my hair natural more often which means I'm not using heat.

Lastly, my hair is already pretty healthy and I'll keep up other precautions such as deep conditioning, sleeping on a satin pillow case and looking after my hair.

Does anyone else out there not protective style?

  1. This video came at the most perfect time for me!! I've been working from home for the last couple of months writing up my PhD thesis and I've really just slouched when it comes to what I look like when at home. Literally no effort whatsoever, no make up, no good clothes, no good hair, thinking I'll save it all from when I go out....but then I never go out because I look crappy and feel crappy! Today before even seeing this post I painted my nails, put make up on and styled my hair and dressed properly! Already feel better! Now it's so nice to have that reaffirmed and when I'm on a break from writing I won't hesitate to get out of the house and feel my best!

  2. I used to be a 100% anti-protective styler. I detested it. If you're gonna have long beautiful hair---way not flaunt it right? I didn't become a PS'er until after I realized that my second child was just as in love with my strands as I was. He is a certified hair puller. Every single time that my hair was down, his hands were in it. He's almost 2 now---and he still tugs at my hair when its within his reach. It took a while, but I've found styles that allow me to still look cute and pulled together without having my hair out. PS'ing doesn't have to be limiting or make you feel like you're not "looking your best." But I'm not gonna front---when I work my big fluffy bantu knots---I feel like a million bucks! How lucky are we that we can change up our style with a bat of an eye?

    Great post chica

  3. Ahhh, this has always been an issue for me. Because sometimes, it feels like it's harder to feel like a million bucks with "protective styles". However, I agree with KLP. Not all protective styles are created equal. There are some that can make you look super cute and put together. And then there are others that are, well, maybe best suited for staying indoors (smile)! I think it depends on so many factors tho (your personality, how you carry yourself, other ways you accentuate your beauty, how a particular style looks on "you", etc). I say either way, whether you go the protective style or loose and free route, do what makes you happy. Have no regrets with whatever you choose! And, remember, it's just hair. You can always change it up! Good post. This brought about some good conversation.
