Newbie Series Part Four: Creating Hair Goals

Creating Hair Goals

Part one
Part two
Part three

So now you know how to take care of your hair, but how do you create achievable hair goals?

The best way to make goals, in both everyday life and in terms of hair care is to have an overall goal and then have many sub-goals and even sub-sub goals to get you there.

You should start my making an "ultimate goal" this goal is where you will be at the 'end' of your hair journey. Now to reach this goal you will need to create sub-goals which can help you reach that ultimate goal. Examples of sub-goals include reaching other lengths, for example bra-strap length and having healthy hair. To reach these sub-goals you need to achieve smaller, more everyday goals such as, cutting off your split ends, protective styling 4 times a week, deep conditioning your hair once a week etc. Below is an example of some of my current goals with sub goals.

Hair Typing Problems

When people start looking into their own hair types the first place they start is generally a chart similar to this one. I'm around 3b/3c however I have the issue that my hair isnt ringlets, it's 's' curls but type 3 doesn't allow for 's' curls. Importantly, so what if I'm type 3b/3c? The chart shows nothing other than what we already know. I recently came across a fantastic youtuber who has created a much much better typing system. Below is the video and you can read her interview with me here.

Embrace Messy Hair

I was reading this article when the finding that those who wake up with "horrid" hair spend over an hour feeling low (although that statistic isn't probably strictly true) and it reminded me of a time when I hated my hair. A time when I relaxed my hair and ripped it out with combs just because it wasn't perfect and the way it was "supposed" to look according to the media. In other words it wasn't, long, straight and shiny. Yes I do still yearn for this hairstyle but in doing so I do not wish to destroy my natural pretty curls! In fact I love the versatility that one day I could wear my hair silky straight and the next I could wear it big a curly.

In this post I just wanted to address some common hair hang ups, and why we should actually learn to love these hang ups!

If you're following me on twitter you would have seen that today was the first #brownbeauty talk on twitter. If you're not following me use the social media icons on the right to do so. As the photo below shows (click read more) its about Black and Asian women in the beauty industry. It will be every Sunday at 8pm (English time). It was very interesting to hear everyones opinions on matters that concern women of colour (WOC) and i'd like to thank all those involved.
